Pioneering Healthnotes Recipe Program Brings Great-Tasting Recipes to Supermarkets Nationwide

EatingWell, Rodale, and Hyperion Publishing provide hundreds of easy-to-make, healthy recipes through Healthnotes network of in-store kiosks and Web media

PORTLAND, Ore.—May 4, 2007—Healthnotes, the leading provider of wellness-driven marketing programs for retailers, today announced a unique new recipe partner program, bringing healthy, great-tasting recipes from trusted publishers where consumers need them most—in the grocery store. With more than 60 percent of consumers looking for fresh ideas on what to make for dinner every night; time-pressed shoppers now have a truly grab-and-go way to find fast, easy-to-make recipes for healthy family meals.

Based on an interactive wellness program for food and drug retailers called Healthnotes Connect™, the in-store kiosks for the first time will incorporate hundreds of recipes from EatingWell magazine and best-selling cookbooks published by Rodale Inc. and Hyperion Publishing. Healthnotes WebConnect, which is integrated on retailers’ websites, will also feature hundreds of recipes from these popular cookbooks.

“We’re kicking off our recipe partner program with three of the most well known and trusted sources for fast, easy, and healthy family recipes,” said Dr. Schuyler Lininger, Healthnotes CEO and President. “Our new recipe library provides retailers with a valuable and engaging resource they can offer to today’s on-the-go consumer.”

With a simple tap on the Healthnotes touchscreen kiosk, shoppers can quickly select and print a recipe and grab the needed ingredients from nearby grocery shelves. Designed to make family meal planning easier, the extensive recipe library is searchable based on shoppers’ personal tastes, food preferences, and dietary needs.

“Grocery retailers are providing a valuable consumer service by giving busy shoppers one-click access to our healthy and delicious recipes,” said Tom Witschi, CEO of EatingWell Media Group., which produces EatingWell magazine, www.eatingwell.com, and books on health and cooking such as the new EatingWell Diet. “Consumers hurrying in to buy groceries can feel more confident about selecting healthier ingredients on-the-fly. This means they can quickly prepare simple, healthy, great-tasting meals at home.”

All recipes comply with nutritionist guidelines for healthy diets: no trans-fats, low in saturated fat, and less than 30 percent of calories from fat. They also meet strong consumer preferences for recipes from independent sources. According to recent research conducted by The Hartman Group, a market research firm that specializes in the health and wellness marketplace, consumers were 40 percent more likely to trust recipes from objective, outside sources than from retailers or manufacturers.

“Today’s time-pressed consumers now have a valuable on-the-spot tool in their supermarket aisles, making it easy to find great-tasting recipes for healthy family dinners from the Rodale brand that they know and trust,” declared Andrew Malkin, Vice President, Trade Book Sales for Rodale Inc. The Healthnotes library features selected recipes from the company’s best-selling cookbooks including:

  • Prevention’s Fit and Fast Meals in Minutes (Over 150 Delicious, Healthy Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less) by Linda Gassenheimer
  • The Sugar Solution Cookbook by The Editors of Prevention and Ann Fittante
  • In Great Taste (Fresh, Simple Recipes for Eating and Living Well) by Evelyn H. Lauder
  • Canyon Ranch Cooks (More Than 200 Delicious, Innovative Recipes from America’s Leading Health Resort) by Barry Correia, Scott Uehlein and the Kitchen Staff of Canyon Ranch
  • 12 Best Foods Cookbook (Over 200 Delicious Recipes Featuring the 12 Healthiest Foods) by Dana Jacobi
  • The Balanced Plate (The Essential Elements of Whole Foods and Good Health) by Renee Loux

For retailers, Healthnotes kiosks provide a unique shopper service, making the in-store experience more enjoyable and productive as well as increasing the likelihood that shoppers will purchase additional products to round out their dinner menus.

“We’re excited that shoppers can now find our delicious recipes in their supermarkets, and we hope that this promotion will encourage them to buy these great cookbooks,” explained Jane Comins, Executive Director of Marketing at Hyperion Publishing. The Healthnotes kiosks include selected recipes from Hyperion’s popular cookbooks, including:

  • Eat, Drink and Weigh Less by Mollie Katzen and Walter Willett, MD
  • The Daily Soup Cookbook by Leslie Kaul, Bob Spiegel, Peter Siegel, and Carla Ruben
  • The Pump Energy Food Cookbook by Steve Kapelonis and Elena Kapelonis
